Striking a vast contrast with developer Dontnod’s other games, Vampyr is a dark and gritty adventure set in Victorian London. With a unique spin on player choice, the game presents an interesting dilemma for players in both story and game design aspects. Doctor Jonathan Reid is a renowned surgeon trying to help those in need, but at the same time happens to be a newborn vampire with a thirst for blood. Vampyr thus makes players question the nature of their actions. Will you try to heal everyone in one of its districts? Or will you let the city succumb to complete darkness? It is an interesting setup rarely presented in gaming, although execution of such vital choice is often lacking. Nonetheless, Vampyr is an engaging adventure game well worth playing for its intrigue, mysterious characters and exploration.

The gaming industry just won’t quit making remasters

Dark Souls Remastered

We are well into the first half of 2018 and given a year or two, will be looking into a new console generation. Competition between Intel and AMD to produce the fastest processor with the highest amount of cores will no doubt play into that, and games will be created even bigger than they are now. Still, that doesn’t stop the gaming industry from cranking out remasters of older games year after year and isn’t showing any signs of slowing down. I like that roughly in the recent year, publishers focused on bringing titles from a generation or a few ago rather than titles from 2010s before the Xbox One and PS4 came out. This is generally because they’ve already exhausted the catalogue of games produced in the period of 2010-2015 and don’t have much elsewhere to go beyond that. With fairly recent Dark Souls Remastered and Far Cry 3: Classic Edition popping up for release, however, the gaming industry isn’t quite done with remasters just yet.

Warframe announced for the Nintendo Switch

The constantly expanding online free-to-play shooter Warframe is heading over to Nintendo Switch, developer Digital Extremes announced at TennoCon 2018. Having found critical acclaim on the PC in the last few years, and more recently, on PS4 and Xbox One, Warframe is expanding further so now gamers on Nintendo can enjoy it as well. The free title features fluid movement, excellent shooting, diverse crafting depth, and since 2017, large open areas, with another one slated to release later this year.

The Switch port is being worked on by the Panic Button studio, known for releasing Rocket League, Doom and Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus on Nintendo’s home console. Warframe will take a graphical hit to run smoothly on the Switch, as in its gameplay structure, high framerates are much needed over extensive texture detail. The game will be free-to-play as it is everywhere else, although microtransactions will be included. Playing Warframe some time ago, I never encountered issues with progression, which is never hindered if you don’t pay any money for in game currency. The release date isn’t known just yet, but expect it to show up on Nintendo’s eShop sometime this year.
